Spinal Manipulation

Spinal manipulation, also known as “High-Velocity Low-Amplitude Thrust” or “Spinal Manipulative Therapy,” is a technique that treats back pain, neck pain, and other musculoskeletal conditions. Spinal manipulation is a unique technique where the therapist uses their hands to apply a rapid impulse, or thrust, in order to achieve a “popping” or “cracking” sound, similar to the sound you hear when you crack your knuckles. Manipulations tend to give people a sense of instant gratification after feeling like they are “stuck” or “stiff” in certain areas of the spine. Spinal manipulation is used by physical therapists to:

• restore the spine’s structural integrity
• facilitate movement
• relieve pain
• increase circulation
• relax muscles
• improve muscle and nerve function

Other benefits of spinal manipulation include increasing range of motion and reducing the dysfunction in both joint and soft tissue through intervention. These effects can start immediately after the manipulation and can extend for hours to days. Along with additional treatments performed during the session and guidance on home exercises, these benefits can soon become permanent. Most procedures are done on a padded, adjustable table. Parts of the table can be dropped as the treatment is being done, adding different forces to the movement.
Performing spinal manipulations requires a fairly high degree of skill and many hours of practice to earn proficiency. It is important that you seek medical help from a licensed practitioner such as one of our highly-trained physical therapists. Studies have revealed a clear benefit for low back pain, as well as acute or chronic neck pain, and headaches, compared to the effects of muscle relaxants, medical prescriptions, or usual medical care.
